Affilate Marketing – The Way To a Fortune?

Affiliate marketing is system where companies sell products and pay a commission to the distributor known as the affiliate. This typically works by an affiliate promoting a product on their website in the form of a banner advertisement or text link to the retailers website. There will be a special code in the link so that the retailer can identify who sent the customer to them.

Is affiliate marketing the way to a fortune?

Affiliate commissions can vary from a small percentage to quite a considerably large percentage of the selling price. Many large companies use affiliates to promote their products. Amazon, Argos, GoDaddy, Yahoo and many more. To become an affiliate you either need to register directly with the company or go through a third party such as Commission Junction. Clickbank is also a very well known company that promotes electronically downloaded products, namely ebooks and software.

Traffic

To make money as an affiliate you need a good deal of traffic to your website for the banner and text type marketing. Banners generally have a fairly low level of click throughs and so need to be seen by many people to get results. It helps of course if you promote products that are more likely to be of interest to your website visitors.

Build a List

Those people that build a list of prospects and market products that are suited to them can do very well indeed. Many make thousands of dollars a month in commissions. Having a list of people that you have built trust with is important. However do not misuse that trust and promote products to them that are not very good nor targeted to their needs. Their trust in you will be ruined and quite rightly so.

Social Media

Another way to promote affiliate products is through social media accounts such as Twitter and Facebook. These accounts allow you to post links with your messages and so the link can be your affiliate link to a particular product that you are promoting.

Find Your Niche

The most successful people that use affiliate marketing will have niche websites or lists. If you want to make a living from affiliate marketing you must decide what your niche(s) will be and build the site / blog with that in mind. You then need to find products that are good that will most likely suit the majority of your readers / subscribers. Do not try to hard! People like to buy rather than be sold too. Where is The Easy Button?

Always remember that there is no ‘easy button’ when it comes to Internet Marketing despite the hype that you will see. It takes time to build trust and a brand for your website so that you will get enough people to follow your affiliate links. Be honest and show genuine interest in your targeted audience and provide them with great products and you will do well.

  1. I hear a lot of people talking about this type of marketing scheme as a way of making money. You are right to highlight the word ‘Easy’ as that is often the impression given.

Given the time I don’t have to run my own business I think I will leave these schemes to those that understand. Would like to hear peoples opinions though.

  2. Affiliate marketing is quite an art and something that you’d really need to study and learn properly before embarking on it.
I have several friends who are pretty successful at it, but as with any ‘business’ it does take time, dedication, education and effort.
There are many sites out there nowadays that operate affiliate programs, from Amazon to bookmakers to airlines, but this is one of the areas that has a bad reputation online due to it being promoted as a ‘get rich while you sit in your pyjamas’ business. It can be a lucrative business, but it takes some work.

  3. A really interesting article Roland and this is something that I heard of but do not know much about.
Phil, my concerns about advertising other things on my website are what message would it portray to visitors/clients. Maybe they are better placed on blogs. I will have to do some more research

  4. Emma, a valid concern certainly.
I guess the bottom line is do they add any value to your existing service? If they do, then it may be appropriate to advertise on your existing site, but in a specific “other services” section for example.
If they’re quite diverse from what you do, then I would definitely be suggesting a different site, as it will detract from your current services.
    Hope this helps.
