Emma, a valid concern certainly.
I guess the bottom line is do they add any value to your existing service? If they do, then it may be appropriate to advertise on your existing site, but in a specific "other services" section for example.
If they're quite diverse from what you do, then I would definitely be suggesting a different site, as it will detract from your current services.
Hope this helps.

A really interesting article Roland and this is something that I heard of but do not know much about.
Phil, my concerns about advertising other things on my website are what message would it portray to visitors/clients. Maybe they are better placed on blogs. I will have to do some more research

Affiliate marketing is quite an art and something that you'd really need to study and learn properly before embarking on it.
I have several friends who are pretty successful at it, but as with any 'business' it does take time, dedication, education and effort.
There are many sites out there nowadays that operate affiliate programs, from Amazon to bookmakers to airlines, but this is one of the areas that has a bad reputation online due to it being promoted as a 'get rich while you sit in your pyjamas' business. It can be a lucrative business, but it takes some work.

I hear a lot of people talking about this type of marketing scheme as a way of making money. You are right to highlight the word 'Easy' as that is often the impression given.

Given the time I don't have to run my own business I think I will leave these schemes to those that understand. Would like to hear peoples opinions though.
