Is Your Website Green?

Companies and individuals are becoming increasingly aware of their impact on the environment. In the past, the main focus had been on chemical pollutants and outputs resulting from business and manufacturing practices and processes. Now, with the growing concern over climate change we are asked to monitor our energy use and carbon emissions, try to reduce them, and minimise the negative impact on our planet.

Green hosting ….

is a simple, but easy way to cut your company (or personal) carbon emissions without having to massively change a working practice, or introduce new procedures. In fact, it is such an easy change you will wonder why you haven’t done it sooner!

Green hosting is when your server provider ensures that all energy and resources needed to run your hosting service are from renewable energy sources. This means that all power will come from solar, wind, hydro or other clean energy sources and not from traditional power plants. They may run their own turbines or generators or they may work with an external company to ensure that all their power comes from a renewable energy source. No harmful chemicals or emissions will be released into the atmosphere or the land.

Impact to the environment is minimal when using renewable energy sources. It draws on nature’s own energy and converts it into the kind of power we can use. It is also in abundant supply – unlike the gas, oil and coal we are ripping up the planet for.

Green hosting is important because the amount of energy required to run even a single server for 24 hours a day, every day of the year for…forever takes a lot of energy! Even one computer left on overnight for a year creates enough CO2 to fill a double decker bus! (See www.carbontrust.co.uk for more shocking facts.)

As yet we do not know the full extent of the damage that global warming will have on the earth. We are already seeing the effects of climate change around the world with extreme weather fronts and rising sea levels. We can only guess how much damage we can do – and we may never be able to repair it.

The more people that switch to green web hosting and recognise the positive effect that it is having on our environment, the better! Even if you are sceptical about global warming, surely there is no harm in trying green hosting? The service is exceptional and you won’t notice any difference! (You will just feel a lot better about it.)

Consumers are also showing that they care how conscientious businesses are about where they get their energy and how important their environmental or ‘green’ policies are to the organisation as a whole. They are starting to opt for greener choices as they see those companies are more responsible and caring for the world that we live in.

Green hosting won’t be a massive change for you, but it is an exceptionally important change for the environment – and your customers will be impressed too.

But beware, there are lots of organisations that are claiming to offer ‘green’ hosting, but many of them are simply purchasing carbon credits, they’re still burning fossil fuels, they’re still damaging the planet, but they’re claiming to be green. Don’t be taken in by these pseudo-green services, always check that your green hosting provides the real deal.
