How do you get ahead of the competition?

To be able get ahead of the competition in business it is important to be different. Seth Godin wrote a book called Purple Cow. The thought process behind this book is that if you in your daily life see thousands of cows they will all appear the same and you will not even talk about seeing cows.

However suppose that one day you went a past a field of cows and one of them was bright purple? Wow! I am sure you would want to take a closer look and then tell everyone you met that you had seen a purple cow.

Avoid the easy option

To apply this to our business does not necessarily mean using paint! Although if you own a shop some decoration to make it stand out could be a first step. However what will make your business stand out is providing the best service and the best products. Don’t take the easy option and go for the lowest prices. Anyone can do that and anyone can soon lose money.

It is far better to raise the standards, employ nicer and more knowledgeable staff. You should make the whole experience of doing business with your company more enjoyable and different to the rest. This is the harder way and takes effort to maintain standards and therefore you will be different as others take the easy routes.

The companies that people talk about in a positive way are the ones that go the extra mile. The staff know what they are doing and can make decisions to satisfy their customers. The products and services provided is of finest quality.

Questions to ask yourself

What can you do to make your business stand out from the crowd? How can you paint it purple?

These are questions that need to be considered and answers found if you are going to have the competitive edge over your rivals.

  1. Very true. Too often you see people advertising their company as “the cheapest” or “the leading xxxxx” but they have nothing to back it up. Their business looks the same and has the same model as 200 others. They need to make more of an effort to stick in potential customers minds.

    Personally my own business is similar to others, pretty much the industry dictates we work a certain way, I have made it my job to ensure that visually it is different. It is the hook that draws people in and then our knowledge and enthusiasm take over to win the deal.
