Top 10 Tips for Business Networking

  1. Networking is about being you! People buy people and you need to build the trust of others by following the principle Meet, Like, Know, Trust. Let people get to know the real you.
  2. Choose network groups that have like minded people. Some meetings are based on learning or lobbying government about business needs. Whilst these meetings may serve a useful purpose their effect in getting business will be diminished as the people attending will have their attention focused elsewhere.
  3. Only stick with groups that will achieve your goals. If meetings are disorganised and the people attending seem unhelpful find another group.
  4. Volunteer within the group. This helps you to stay visible within the group and will increase your profile in the minds of those that attend.
  5. Use open ended questions when in networking conversations. This opens up the person to you and shows that you are really interested in them.
  6. Be helpful to all in the group by becoming a powerful resource for them. You will become the person they turn to for advice and therefore as you are in the front of their minds business and referrals will come your way.
  7. Be clear about what you do so that you can explain your business in a concise and easy to understand way. If people can’t work out what you do exactly they will not be able to refer you to others.
  8. Be articulate in how you present yourself and your business. When you speak at meetings such as in an introduction round make sure that you speak well.
  9. Follow up quickly on any referrals you are given and always thank those that give you referrals immediately.
  10. Thank those that you meet by following up with a phone call, email or letter. Keep in touch even when away from meetings where you feel that you can benefit someone and where they can benefit you.
