Though I agree that Copyscape and Google Alerts are great tools, and I use them both in my own work, I also want to give credit to Plagium (plagium.com) as it is similar to Copyscape, but free. It also has some pretty neat visual features that make the process of sorting through matches even easier.

Plagium also has a pretty effective alerts system, similar to Google Alerts and it's all based on Yahoo's search API, which is pretty solid and compared favorably with Copyscape in my tests.

Definitely keep Copyscape and Google Alerts around but I highly recommend adding Plagium to the tool box.
